🎄 How to Survive (and Enjoy!) a Christmas Photoshoot with Toddlers & Kids – Tips from an Aberdeen Family Photographer
The Most Wonderful (and Busy!) Time of the Year 🎅
The festive season is just around the corner — which means twinkling lights, hot chocolate, and of course, Christmas photoshoots!
As an Aberdeen-based family and newborn photographer, I know how exciting (and sometimes a little hectic!) it can be to get little ones ready for photos. Whether it’s your toddler’s first Christmas mini session or you’re wrangling more than one child, your session can be fun, relaxed, and full of laughter.
Here are my top tips to help you prepare and make the most of your Christmas Mini Session at Estherography.
🎁 1. Outfits – Keep It Simple, Cosy, and You
When it comes to what to wear, simple and comfortable always wins. You don’t need to go over the top — the focus is on your family’s connection, not matching outfits.
Here are a few ideas that always look lovely on camera:
Jeans paired with neutral tops or cosy jumpers (creams, greys, soft greens, or beige photograph beautifully).
A touch of sparkle or a festive dress is always welcome if that’s your style — but totally optional.
Want to add a playful twist? Bring your matching family Christmas pyjamas for some fun, relaxed shots at the end!
Keep in mind that the studio can feel warm with all the lights, so try not to overdress little ones — light layers are perfect.
And since we have a no-shoes policy in the studio, make sure everyone’s socks are clean and cute (you’d be surprised how often those little toes make it into the pictures! 😄).

🎄 2. Pick the Right Time for Your Little Ones
Timing can make all the difference! Try to choose a session time that works best around your child’s nap and snack schedule — a well-rested, fed child is far more likely to enjoy the experience.
If none of the advertised Christmas Mini Session times suit your little one’s routine, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. I completely understand how unpredictable children’s schedules can be, and I’ll do my best to find a time that fits.

A familiar toy, blanket, or teddy can help your child feel more relaxed and confident in a new setting. Sometimes, that favourite comfort item even sneaks into a few photos — creating the sweetest, most personal memories.
Don’t be afraid to bring along a small favourite — it can really make a difference!

Children are full of surprises — and that’s what makes these sessions so special! My Christmas Mini Sessions are short, light-hearted, and full of festive fun.
There’s no pressure for perfect posing or stillness. I’ll gently guide your family with prompts and play — letting everyone’s personalities shine. Often, it’s the in-between giggles and cuddles that make the most heart-warming photos.

The best thing you can do on the day? Relax and enjoy yourself.
When you’re calm and having fun, your kids feel that energy too. I’ll handle the setup, lighting, and direction — all you need to do is be present and soak in these beautiful, fleeting moments.
