Why Photographing Women Is About More Than Beautiful Images

Almost every woman I photograph tells me the same thing — often before we’ve even started.

“I’m not photogenic.”
“I don’t know how to pose.”
“I’ll book a session when I feel more confident.”

These words are so common that they almost feel expected. And yet, every time I hear them, I’m reminded of how deeply many women have learned to step out of the frame — to minimise themselves, to wait for a better version of who they think they should be.

Photographing women has never been about creating perfect images for me.
It’s about something much deeper.

It’s about presence.
Identity.
And being seen as you are — not as who you think you need to become.

So many women move through life behind the camera. They document their children, their families, their milestones — but rarely allow themselves to be part of the story. Over time, this absence becomes normal.

But it shouldn’t be.

A portrait session isn’t about fixing anything. It’s not about changing your body, your smile, or your personality. It’s about slowing down long enough to acknowledge yourself in the season you’re in right now.

As a women’s portrait photographer based in Aberdeen, my approach is calm, respectful, and intentional. I don’t expect women to arrive knowing how to pose or perform. That isn’t their job.

My role is to create space — a space where you can breathe, settle, and simply exist without pressure.

Confidence doesn’t come from being told to smile or stand a certain way. It comes from feeling safe. From being guided gently. From knowing that you don’t need to prove anything to deserve to be photographed.

Motherhood, career changes, personal growth, and life transitions all reshape us. Yet so often, women wait until they feel “ready” to be seen again. Until things slow down. Until they recognise themselves in the mirror.

But life rarely pauses long enough for that moment.

Photography has the power to anchor us — to remind us of who we were, who we are, and how far we’ve come. A portrait becomes more than an image; it becomes a quiet marker in time.

This is why I believe photographing women is about more than beautiful images.

It’s about honouring your presence.
About stepping back into the frame.
About allowing yourself to be documented — not someday, but now.

You don’t need to be photogenic.
You don’t need to know how to pose.
You don’t need to wait until you feel different.

You are already enough to be photographed.
